PM backs Australia carbon tax

Prime minister David Cameron has praised a new law announced in Australia that will tax the country’s top 500 carbon emitters.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Mr Cameron wrote a letter to Australian prime minister Julia Gillard calling the new policy “a strong and clear signal that Australia is determined to make its contribution to addressing this challenge.”

Gillard's tax proposals followed months of tense negotiations between the minority Labor government and Green and independent MPs.
