A new report from Pike Research has predicted that European investment in the smart grid will reach over $80 billion by 2020, resulting in almost 240 million smart meter installations across Europe.
Pike Research cites the vision of a low-carbon Europe as a key driver to the investment. The EU aims to have reduced its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions dramatically, and its dependence on fossil fuels, by 2050.
37% of the total investment will come from transmission system upgrades, whilst later on in the period uptake of electric vehicle management systems will become significant.
