Multimedia journalist Chikodi Chima has outlined more ways for the US smart grid to increase energy efficiency, by using the example set by social media sites such as Facebook.
One example, OPower, allows its customers to see up-to-the-minute usage information on their laptops and smartphones, and then encourages them to be the most energy efficient.
The constant information their customers receive means they can compete with each other in a way the old ‘dumb’ grid could never allow.
With the US smart roll-out well underway, Chokidi Chima sees the potential for a national social network including every American homeowner.
