The Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) has given its thoughts to discussions about how the UK should prepare for the nationwide roll out of smart meters, due to begin next year.
During a meeting of energy metering experts in London today, the IET said consumers must be made aware that a new smart meter will only bring efficiency and financial benefits if it is hooked up to a smart grid which measures the nation’s energy demand.
IET spokesman Professor Simon Harrison said: "Key decisions are being taken by government in coming months, and industry will need to deliver a secure, workable and future-proof system on a very large scale, in an environment of rapid change.”
