London Midland, Birmingham’s largest train company, has become the first in the UK to install smart meters into its entire electric fleet.
The new system allows London Midland to monitor its energy usage, and pay only for the electricity that it uses.
The company said smart meters would save them up to £15 million on their energy, and slash its annual carbon emissions by around 20,000 tonnes.
The programme’s director, Mike Haigh said: “If we know how much electricity we are using, we can start to manage that usage.
“Just as ‘smart meters’ are starting to help us make intelligent decisions about using energy at home, our trains should be no different.”
