Ofgem no longer responsible for smart meter rollout

13.12.2010

UK energy regulator Ofgem is no longer responsible for the nationwide rollout of smart meters, with the Department of Energy Climate Change taking the reins of the project instead.

The announcement was made in an open letter from Energy Minister Charles Hendry and chair of the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority Lord Mogg.

The Coalition is sticking to the Labour administration's original target of rolling out smart meters to all homes across the UK by 2017, and is considering whether it could be completed any faster.

Ofgem will still be involved in the project, setting up a Data Comms Company (DCC) to oversee the communications side of the rollout, and protecting consumers’ interests.
