Ofgem publishes safeguards for smart meter consumers

16.02.11

Ofgem, the government’s energy watchdog, has published a consultation to ensure British consumers are given a fair deal by the rollout of smart meters.

The consultation discusses unique aspects of smart metering like new payment methods and remote disconnection, and making sure consumers can switch provider once the technology is installed.

Zoe McLeod, energy expert at Consumer Focus, said:

"The next step must be for suppliers to address the data protection and privacy issues which the introduction of smart meters, and the information they collect, inevitably raise.

"Suppliers must make sure that customers retain the privacy they want and the ability to switch easily to tariffs that work for them," she said.
