The Energy Saving Trust has warned that smart meters will only deliver their promised energy efficiency benefits if the public buys in to the scheme.
The UK government’s smart meter roll out is to begin in 2014, with 53 million planned smart meters installations by 2019. The roll out will reduce the UK’s carbon emissions, and could save £7.3 billion in energy bills over the next 20 years.
David Weatherall, housing strategy manager for the organisation, explained:
"Smart meters are not in themselves 'smart' – they can't cut carbon and bills on their own. The householder has to be engaged enough to take action based on the information they're given."
