Recently-published figures from Datamonitor suggest that residential smart metering must be cheaper for more people in the UK to buy in.
The study revealed that the global smart meter market is set to increase by 350% by 2015, reaching $5.7billion, but also claimed that the technology is currently more expensive to install in the UK than anywhere else in the world.
Jon Lane, energy director at Datamonitor, said: "The UK costs are only acceptable as the government has used carbon savings and an anticipated reduction in demand in its calculations. If consumers don't reduce usage then the UK system becomes an expensive white elephant."
