Smart meter rollout due to increase solar PV uptake

2009’s Third Energy Package states that, by the end of the decade, 80% of European households (more than 200 million homes) must be equipped with smart meters. These meters allow homeowners to determine their electricity consumption in real time.

According to The Smart Grid in Europe 2012-2016 report, the solar PV sector and other micro-renewables are set to grow with this European-wide rollout of smart grids. It’s believed that this will happen because people will become more informed in their energy usage.
