

Smart meters, known to offer benefits including better management of energy demand and increased cost savings, have been shown to have an unexpected advantage: speeding up disaster recovery.
Following the 27th April tornadoes across Alabama, more than 400,000 of Alabama Power’s customers were left without power. According to a spokesman from the utility company, it received signals from smart meters telling it which customers were without power. This enabled them to pinpoint which areas had received the most damage, and thereby prioritize the recovery effort. In doing so, 99% of Alabama Power’s customers had their power restored within seven days.
