Study finds smart meters do change usage habits

26.07.11

A survey of homeowners in Texas has found that smart meters do cause people to change their energy habits.

71% of the 500 participants said the technology, which allows them to monitor the consumption of each appliance in their home, has made them more conscientious about their energy use.

Some key survey results:

  • 83% turn off lights at night or when leaving a room
  • 51% adjust the temperature on their thermostat
  • 93% are satisfied with their in-home display
  • 97% said they will continue using it

The survey was conducted by the US Department of Energy, and CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric.
