Smart Meter Trial Findings

Opus Energy’s Smart Meter investment is driven by the customer benefits. As well as conducting our own Smart Meter pilot study, the Carbon Trust’s trial into the use of advanced metering in SMEs, the largest in the UK to date, highlighted the overwhelming benefits that Smart Meter technology can make to an organisation.

The Carbon Trust’s trial saw Smart Meters installed in over 580 sites across the UK. Results show that by switching to a Smart Meter, on average SMEs can identify potential carbon savings of over 12 per cent and successfully achieve savings of over 5 per cent. On average, the companies who took part in the trail saved over £1,000 a year on their energy bills.

On the launch of Opus Energy’s free Smart Meter scheme Charlie Crossley Cooke, Managing Director of Opus Energy said “we feel strongly that when this type of technology is available – with so many benefits for our customers, it should be provided free of charge. Smart Meters will not only improve the accuracy of our customers' bills, the technology will also save them time and money, with the added benefit of helping to reduce climate change."

Recent research carried out by the Energy Retail Association (ERA) showed that energy efficiency is a key concern for the majority of adults in Britain. People seem to be growing more conscious about their personal carbon footprint – 74% said that they would like to cut energy consumption to reduce their environmental impact. The YouGov survey, found 70% of the respondents thought that Smart Metering technology would help reduce their energy consumption especially if they could see usage in real monetary terms.

Smart Meters can contribute to changing behavior patterns – get your free Smart Meter and start saving money whilst minimising the environmental impact.
